Special Education Summer Training

Improving the quality of life for individuals with intellectual disabilities is the focus of a series of training sessions being held across Nebraska throughout the summer and into the fall.

Dr. Tom Pomeranz, an expert in improving the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities, is making his way around the state providing training to help those working with special education students in all levels of the school system. One of the primary goals of this training is to equip educators with the necessary knowledge to utilize assistive technologies and increase the skill sets of these educators.

Through these sessions, Pomeranz strives to work with educators so they are prepared to help the students with disabilities have a productive experience in school and in the years following graduation. Although the training is geared for special education teachers, administrators and principals, the sessions are open to anyone with a desire to improve the quality of life for disabled students.

The sessions being held in Alliance from August 11 to 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. focuses on the topic of training to maximize successful outcomes of inclusive education. Pomeranz works to assist in including students with developmental disabilities in the classroom with the other students. By doing so, he strives to create an environment where all students can build dignity, respect for one another and to offer choices to those with disabilities.

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 11 through 14 Pomeranz is holding sessions intended to help develop choices for disabled individuals following their graduation from high school.

“It is about promoting inclusive education and transitioning young adults from high school to life afterward, for the rest of their lives,” said Wade Goodwin, who works with Pomeranz to organize and facilitate the training sessions.

Pomeranz will continue to hold training sessions around the state in various cities, and his schedule brings him back to Alliance October 6 through 10.

The state Department of Health and Human Services, along with the League of Human Dignity provide for these training sessions so that everyone can live a productive and dignified life.
